Are you looking for a romantic escape in New Zealand? Maybe you’re thinking of proposing to your partner amongst the spectacular scenery of the South Island. We’ve put together a list of some of the country’s most romantic things to do when you head to this beautiful and remote place.

Gallop across New Zealand South Island

There are few things as romantic as saddling up your horses to go riding around the inspiring landscapes in New Zealand’s South Island. Trot up the winding pathways that lead up through the mountains or around the island’s lakes. Alternatively, you could gallop along the white sandy beaches, stopping to enjoy a picnic. Don’t know how to horseback ride? No problem. There are plenty of staples where you can learn or take guided tours.

See everything from above

More romance can be had when you take off in your private helicopter to fly above the spectacular landscape below. If you wish, you can take a guide to explain what you’re seeing below. Alternatively, take the pleasure flight with just the two of you, perhaps touching down at a scenic mountain top to take a moment with your loved one without the crowds.

Look up at the stars

You probably didn’t know this, but New Zealand has the biggest International Dark Sky Reserve in the world. Impress your significant other by taking them to the Mount Cook National Park to spend an evening looking up at the twinkling stars. Better still, try and learn a few of the constellation names so you can point them out. There are several tour companies offering trips out to see the glittering natural wonders, so it won’t be hard to organize.

Take the jump together

While bungee jumping didn’t originate in New Zealand, it did take the extreme sport to the world. It became popular in 1986 when one outfit started throwing thrill seeking backpackers off bridges. For couples who are looking to get their adrenaline kicks, why not take the leap of faith strapped together? You won’t regret it when you’re looking into each other’s eyes as you dangle below.

Hit the vineyards and sample vintages

Some of the finest wines in the world come out of New Zealand, particular from the Marlborough region. There are few things that get you into the amorous mood than spending a day cycling or walking through the vineyards. Afterwards, stop in to try some of the best vintages from years past. If you travel at the right time, you can even help harvest the ripe purple grapes from the vines.

Watch the famous melting sunset on the beach

Grab a bottle of wine and maybe a little bite to eat before heading down to the beach to spend some quality time in full view of the melting orange sunset. There are plenty of spots, but try the beach in the tiny town of Punakaiki. Once the sun has all but faded away, you’ll have the magical starry night.

Spend a night at the Blanket Bay

Often voted one of the world’s most romantic lodges, the Blanket Bay is one of the finest places to stay in the country. Nestled on the edge of the lake with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, there are few places as scenic as this. They even offer a honeymoon package which includes champagne, candle-lit dinners, a helicopter flight up the mountains and flowers in the room.
