A ceremony in Switzerland can lead to a reception overlooking Lake Geneva. A wedding in Austria might take place beneath the peaks of the Alps. Increasingly, I also find myself packing my case for Northern Italy, South Tyrol and the Dolomites, where tall, jagged peaks pierce the sky and remind us that this extraordinary landscape was once beneath an ancient sea.

As a bilingual wedding celebrant in the Alps, I work in English and German and have spent the last fifteen years creating ceremonies for couples who want their day to feel personal, wherever they choose to say their vows.

My work has taken me across the UK and Germany, into Switzerland and Austria, and more recently into Italy. This has included some truly special ceremonies in South Tyrol and the Dolomites, as well as an unforgettable fire and water ritual in Sicily.

Why a Bilingual Wedding Celebrant in the Alps Matters

Couples planning a destination wedding are rarely thinking in strict national borders. They are thinking about a view, a feeling and a place that means something to them.

Weddings and elopements across the Alps

Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of officiating ceremonies in some remarkable places. These have ranged from countryside venues in the UK and Germany to lakeside settings in Switzerland, mountain backdrops in Austria and, most recently, a series of ceremonies across Northern Italy, South Tyrol and the Dolomites.

Each one has reminded me how much this part of Europe has to offer couples who want intimacy, natural beauty and a real sense of occasion, without having to compromise.

Whether you are planning a larger destination wedding or an intimate elopement for two, the mountains, lakes and historic towns across this region provide so many possibilities.

 

A memorable Dolomites elopement near Merano

One elopement I will always carry with me took place near Merano.

T and B had travelled from Canada with an entirely different plan in mind. T had been due to run the Berlin Marathon and collect the final medal in her Abbott World Marathon Majors set. Sadly, an injury forced her to withdraw at the last minute.

Rather than allow the disappointment to take over, B suggested that they come to Europe and get married instead. With barely four weeks to plan everything, they chose the Dolomites.

Their ceremony took place on a floating deck at a spa hotel in a steep valley filled with apple trees. The South Tyrolean peaks rose around us, with the soft September light falling across the landscape.

The ceremony included a hand tying ritual, deeply personal vows and a quiet, tender moment honouring B’s parents, who had recently passed away.

Afterwards, they celebrated with a helicopter ride over the mountains.

It remains one of the clearest reminders I have that the most meaningful ceremonies are not always the ones that go according to the original plan.
