Some of the most useful conversations in the wedding industry happen over lunch, on a venue terrace or during a transfer with someone you have only just met.
A photograph can make you fall in love with a place. Spending time there helps you understand who it might suit, how a celebration could work and who can help bring it together. That is why visiting destinations and getting to know the people behind them remains such an important part of what we do at WeddingsAbroad.com.

Wedding tourism starts with people
Wedding tourism brings together far more than a ceremony and a beautiful view. It involves the hotel welcoming guests, the planner coordinating the day, the florist, photographer, driver, restaurant and local experiences that make a stay memorable.
For couples, those people help shape one of the most personal trips they will ever take. For destinations, a wedding can introduce a whole group of visitors to somewhere they might never have considered. Guests may stay longer, explore the area or return for another visit.
The opportunity is exciting, but it works best when we understand the destination and listen to the people who live and work there.

You cannot ask a photograph about the wet weather plan
We all love a spectacular venue image. When you are helping someone choose where to celebrate, you also need the less glamorous details. How does the journey feel? Where will guests stay? What happens if it rains? How accessible are the spaces? Who will answer the practical questions when planning begins?
A familiarisation trip, usually shortened to FAM trip, creates time to explore those questions with the local teams. Walking through a venue and talking about how it operates can reveal things that are difficult to judge from a website alone.
It also helps us make more thoughtful introductions. A setting that is wonderful for an intimate gathering may offer a very different experience from somewhere designed for a large celebration. Understanding the difference matters.

Cilento: seeing the connections come to life
Our Cilento FAM trip from 5 to 9 October 2026 brought this to life through venue visits, local hospitality, shared meals and time together. WeddingsAbroad.com collaborated with Italy Bride & Groom Weddings and Priti Raichura Events, combining local knowledge with experience from different parts of the wedding industry.
From the welcome at Palazzo Antonietta in San Marco di Castellabate to the closing event at Savoy in Paestum, it was an opportunity to experience the people and hospitality behind the destination.
Priti and her team also created an Indian wedding showcase on the beach, with attendees taking on roles in the wedding party and family. This was a staged learning experience, giving us an opportunity to explore traditions, ceremony, rituals, florals and the practical questions involved in creating a celebration with local teams.
That kind of exchange starts useful conversations. What does a particular celebration require? Which questions should a venue ask? Where does a specialist’s knowledge make a difference? Those conversations help us understand each other and serve future clients more thoughtfully.

The conversations continue after the suitcases are unpacked
Meeting someone in person gives a future conversation a different starting point. You have shared an experience, asked questions and begun to understand how each other works. A follow-up message can become an introduction, a fresh idea or a collaboration worth exploring.
There is plenty of value in the informal moments, too. Shared meals, laughter and a little dancing give people time to relax and get to know one another. The best professional relationships often have a very human beginning.
A visit is the start of a relationship. Keeping in touch, sharing relevant opportunities and following through on introductions is what helps it grow.

What this means for venues and wedding businesses
A thoughtful FAM programme gives hosts the chance to explain their destination in their own words and show how their spaces and services work. For visiting professionals, it builds knowledge they can draw on when advising clients.
At WeddingsAbroad.com, established in 1999, we bring together destination wedding experience, an international community and opportunities to stay visible through relevant content and conversations. FAM trips are part of that wider work, alongside our directory, editorial guides and Exclusive Network.
Every project starts with understanding the audience, the host’s aims and the experience on offer. Good introductions and useful exposure can open doors; future enquiries and bookings depend on the right fit and continued work on both sides.
