The planning of any wedding requires a well-deserved break at the end. This is the time to take stock, reflect on your big day and finally relax. So it’s no surprise to find out that beach holidays are the number one choice for newlyweds.
The idea of a luxury hotel, a tropical beach and peace and quiet is what keeps a lot of couples going when they’re knee-deep in wedding preparations.
But where are the best places to go to to celebrate married life? The ideal place has to have the right level of luxury, not be too touristy, offer the choice of solitude and activity and be of course located in a sun kissed, tropical setting.
With this in mind, we spoke with our friends the honeymoon experts at Destination2, to find out where brides and grooms should be planning their post-nuptial break in 2017.
If there’s ever a holiday location that promises for your every whim to be taken care of, it’s Mauritius. Located on the south east of Africa, this island is a slice of heaven. Beaches that stretch on for miles, turquoise waters and five star living, this Indian island destination is the perfect place for spending time as a newly married couple.
Do nothing or get involved with the range of watersports, hikes and safaris available. Rum tastings, good restaurants and a walk around the 18th century Pamplemousses Botanic Gardens are lovely ways to bide the time if you feel like leaving your sunlounger.
Highlight: The ability to relax. Be tended to throughout the day with great food and drink, indulge in spa treatments or just snooze under a palmtree – this is the perfect location to switch off completely.
There is nowhere quite like Bangkok. This capital city is a mixture of hustle and bustle, outstanding architecture and legendary nightlife. There are some sumptuous five star hotels here providing the perfect springboards to go out and explore the temples, markets (the Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must-see) and the luxury shopping malls.
When you need a break from the city, we recommend one of the cheap transfer flights that can give you a taste of the island life. Krabbi, Phuket and Koh Samui are wonderful sanctuaries for couples who want to feel sand in their toes and a sea breeze in their hair.

For the full desert island experience, Antigua is the place to drop your luggage and explore. Secluded beaches make the perfect place for skinny dipping and resorts are grown-up, sophisticated and luxurious. And you’re in good company, Giorgio Armani, Richard Branson and Oprah Winfrey have all got homes on the island.
Highlight: The island’s history. There is a rich history and culture to Antigua ready to be discovered. Expect to learn about early settlers, Christopher Columbus, colonisation and the island’s distrust of Horatio Nelson.
This small collection of islands are surrounded by white sands and crystal waters in the Andaman Sea. If you want to combine seclusion and peace with a party atmosphere, Langkawi is the perfect place. Divided by the quiet north and the more touristy south, this destination is perfect for honeymooners. When you’ve had enough beach lounging, you can visit Sungai Kilim Nature Park and the Pulau Payar Marine Park to see the amazing underwater life.
Highlight: Nab a lounger on Pentai Cenang beach and watch the sunset while the atmospheric music of a nearby bossanova band drifts on the wind. Bliss!
